03Frequently asked

Questions, answered.

How does wordkit's word counter work?+

It splits your text on whitespace using a Unicode-aware regex, then counts the resulting tokens. Hyphenated words like 'state-of-the-art' count as one. Numbers and contractions count as words. Everything runs locally in your browser — no upload.

Is the word counter really free?+

Yes. The counter, character counter, sentence counter and reading-time calculator are 100% free, with no sign-up and no cap. wordkit Pro adds AI rewriting, grammar checks, and tone analysis — but the counters stay free, forever.

Is my text private?+

Completely. Counting happens entirely in your browser via JavaScript. Nothing is sent to our servers, logged, or stored. You can paste a confidential draft, contract clause, or unpublished manuscript without it leaving your device.

How accurate is the reading time estimate?+

We use 238 words per minute — the average silent reading speed for adults reading non-technical English (Brysbaert, 2019). For technical material, real reading time tends to be 30–50% longer.

Does it count words in other languages?+

Yes. The counter is Unicode-aware and works for any whitespace-separated language including Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, and most European scripts. CJK languages (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) use the character count instead, since they don't use spaces.
